On one of the most important nights of American history, I had the opportunity to interview Project Runway's, Zulema Griffin. The atmosphere was so perfect; it couldn’t have been any better. We were excited about the November election that was taking place and the conversation was fitting. We discussed, Obama, black politics and black history…listening to Zulema speak was inspiring. This conversation was part of her passion because in every collection she creates, it is an inspiration of a global view of black history.
She spoke of her role in Virgin Islands Fashion Week. As featured designer, she showcased her latest line, Photo Plays 1 “Digital Postcards”, which was about transitioning and breaking free of the limitations of how clothing is worn. She feels that clothing could be used in untraditional ways. “Just because it is a dress doesn’t mean it has to be used as a dress.” She proved that by having the opening model, walk down the runway with a dress used as a head wrap. This collection was also about giving reference to black history globally, and viewing Africa as an art element. Zulema’s segment was done beautifully: Gorgeous dresses, paired with John Ashford shoes.
So what’s next for Zulema Griffin? She is taking her business to a whole new level by infusing fashion with technology. She created a brand new multimedia site that shows her collection through her short films. The new site will be very interactive and have an online store. There will also be a blog in place regarding fashion politics and I am really excited to see her view of the industry. Zulema has come a long way since Project Runway. I am looking forward to seeing more of her collections! www.zulemagriffin.com
